In Ayurveda, paralysis is referred to as “Pakshaghata” or “Paksha Vadha.” It is a condition characterized by the loss of movement or function in one side of the body, often resulting from an imbalance in the Vata dosha.

Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine from India, views health as a balance of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), and any disruption in this balance can lead to various health problems, including paralysis.

Facial paralysis- Facial nerve palsy is a condition that causes temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles in the face. In Ayurveda, Ardita is a disease with functional disturbances affecting the Uthamanga (head) and stands close with the symptoms of Bell’s palsy. .

Ayurvedic principles and approaches to managing paralysis:

  • Balancing Doshas: Ayurvedic treatment for paralysis aims to balance the Vata dosha, which is often the primary cause of this condition. This can be achieved through dietary and lifestyle changes.
  • Detox– Detoxification and rejuvenation therapies in Ayurveda. It can be beneficial in treating paralysis by removing toxins and balancing the doshas.
  • Medicine based treatment: Ayurvedic formulations are often used to manage paralysis. Some commonly used herbs include Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Bala, Brahmi, and Guggul. These herbs can be used in various forms such as powders, decoctions, or as part of herbal formulations.
  • Massage: Ayurved massages, such as Abhyanga, with warm medicated oils can be beneficial for improving blood circulation and relaxing the muscles.
  • Diet : Diet plays a important role in Ayurvedic treatment. Foods that aggravate Vata, such as cold and dry foods, should be avoided. Instead, warm and nourishing foods, like cooked vegetables, grains, and ghee, are recommended.
