Ayurvedic treatment for Vitiligo in India

Ayurvedic treatment for vitiligo in India- Vitiligo causes your skin to lose colour or pigmentation. Smooth white or light areas called macules or patches appear on your skin. It generally starts on your hands, forearms, feet and face. Globally, about 1% of the population has vitiligo.

The condition occurs when your body’s immune system destroys melanocytes. Melanocytes are skin cells that produce melanin, the chemical that gives skin its colour, or pigmentation.

Causes

vitiligo is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the melanocytes.

In addition, researchers continue to study how family history and genes may play a role in causing vitiligo.

Sometimes an event –

  • such as a sunburn,
  •  emotional distress,
  •  exposure to a chemical – can trigger vitiligo or make it worse.

Symptoms

Vitiligo signs include:

  • Patchy loss of skin colour, which usually first appears on the hands, face, and areas around body openings and the genitals
  • Premature whitening or greying of the hair on your scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or beard
  • Loss of colour in the tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose (mucous membranes)

Vitiligo can start at any age, but usually appears before age 30.

Depending on the type of vitiligo you have, it may affect:

  • Nearly all skin surfaces. With this type, called universal vitiligo, the discoloration affects nearly all skin surfaces.
  • Many parts of the body. With this most common type, called generalized vitiligo, the discolored patches often progress similarly on corresponding body parts (symmetrically).
  • Only one side or part of the body. This type, called segmental vitiligo, tends to occur at a younger age, progress for a year or two, then stop.
  • One or only a few areas of the body. This type is called localized (focal) vitiligo.
  • The face and hands. With this type, called acrofacial vitiligo, the affected skin is on the face and hands, and around body openings, such as the eyes, nose and ears.

According to Ayurveda, it is called as Shwitra or Shweta Kushta. Ayurveda says Vata and prajakpita have set on the skin then there is an imbalance into the doshas of vatta and pitta

Treatment

Ayurvedic treatment for vitiligo aims to restore the balance of the doshas, primarily through dietary modifications, herbal medicines, and lifestyle changes.

Diet plays a crucial role in Ayurveda, with certain incompatible foods believed to aggravate or pacify the doshas.

For instance, vitiligo patients are often advised to avoid sour foods and citrus fruits that might aggravate the Pitta dosha, and to incorporate more bitter and astringent foods that pacify it.

Herbal Medicines

Ayurveda also offers a wide range of herbal remedies for vitiligo, including  (Psoralea Corylifolia), (Acacia Catechu), and (Terminalia Chebula), among others. These herbs are known for their immune-modulating, antioxidant, and skin-health promoting properties.

Lifestyle Modifications

Ayurveda highlights the importance of a balanced lifestyle in managing and preventing diseases. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques like meditation and yoga are often recommended to vitiligo patients.

External Therapies: External applications like oils, pastes, and creams made from specific herbs may be used to apply directly to the affected areas. These formulations aim to improve pigmentation and overall skin health.  Ayurvedic treatment is often personalized based on an individual’s exclusive constitution and condition. Therefore, a consultation with a practitioner who can evaluate your specific condition is essential.
